Institute of Heraldry

The Royal Kaharagian Institute of Heraldry is the official authority responsible for the design, granting, and regulation of coats of arms, flags, badges, and other ceremonial symbols within the Principality of Kaharagia. It upholds the visual integrity of the state and its noble traditions, ensuring that all symbols are used with meaning, precision, and dignity.

Functioning under the auspices of the Secretariat of State, the Institute advises the Sovereign and all organs of government on matters of heraldic design, ceremonial protocol, and representational style. It plays a key role in shaping Kaharagia’s national identity and in preserving its ceremonial and cultural heritage.

Responsibilities of the Institute

The Institute’s principal functions include:

Granting and Registration of Arms, Flags, and Emblems

The Institute oversees the formal granting of coats of arms, flags, badges, and other emblems by the Sovereign. New grants are issued by Letters Patent on the advice of the Herald Chancellor and Chief Herald. In addition, the Institute may register pre-existing arms and devices, provided they meet the standards of authenticity and heraldic form. All approved achievements are recorded in the national Registers.

Maintenance of Registers and Archival Records

As custodian of the Principality’s heraldic archive, the Institute maintains the official Register of Arms, the Register of Flags and Badges, and other ceremonial records. These registers serve as a permanent record of honour, identity, and governance. They are used to uphold legal and ceremonial continuity, and may be referenced for scholarly, diplomatic, or ceremonial purposes.

Ceremonial and Protocol Advisory

The Institute advises the Royal Court, government Offices, and national institutions on matters of ceremonial protocol and visual identity. This includes guidance on the correct display of arms, precedence, flag design, regalia usage, and formal styles of address. Its role ensures that the symbolism of the Principality is expressed with dignity and consistency across all public and state occasions.

Officers of the Institute

The Institute is led by two principal officers, supported by additional appointees:

The Herald Chancellor

The Herald Chancellor is the ceremonial and administrative head of the Institute, a role held ex officio by the Secretary of State. The Chancellor provides constitutional oversight, ensures legal conformity, and maintains the dignity and standing of the Institute.

The Chief Herald of Kaharagia

The Chief Herald is the professional and operational head of the Institute. They supervise heraldic matters, oversee petitions and grants, manage the registers, and guide the visual direction of the Principality’s symbols.

Deputy Heralds

Appointed to assist with specific duties such as registry management, ceremonial coordination, or visual design.

Heralds Extraordinary

Honorary officers commissioned for special assignments or notable contributions in heraldry, design, or ceremony.
